Singled Out: Evan Alexander Moore “Our Time”

Moore is self described as a political songwriter, a poet and a folk singer. He follows in the trend of those before him like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. The song with its choppy guitar and half spoken half sung message topping the waltzing chord progression beneath. There isn’t a great deal of bells and whistles here, because its not needed, when you have something strong to say the words can cut enough on their own…plus, a little melody and some tambourine.

Who: Evan Alexander Moore

From: NYC, NY

Song: “Our Time”

Latest Record:”The Perennial Millennial” (coming soon)

What About It: “The song is about seizing the cultural moment, and knowing that the best time to change the world is now. Our Time is in the spirit of classic protest tunes from the 50s and 60s, except now the times have changed but the system has not. It’s a song that mixes the old folk style but brings it into modern times.

The song for me means protest, and making the most of the current moment. I wanted to create the feeling of going to a protest at Washington Square. It’s also a mix of the old and new that I mentioned. It was recorded with Lucas Carpenter (The Britanys) at his studio called Outhouse Recorders. Much like the theme of the album, we recorded the whole song on to tape and then bounced it into Pro-Tools to spruce up and modernize it.

As a songwriter, I usually tinker and tinker for a long time until I’m done. Our Time however is one of those songs that was written and I barely touched it; it was just pristine as is. I had an old folk progression and I wrote the four verses you heard around the theme of achieving change. The only edit I made was cutting out a 5th verse I had written. But other than that, it’s one of the few lightning in a bottle moments I’ve had as a songwriter.”
