Interview with The Ballroom Thieves at Newport Folk Festival

11781732_870426709660297_3465152351767081920_nThe Ballroom Thieves had been a name that flew onto my radar quite a bit and I have become acquainted with the band’s music, though even though they are from Boston I never got the chance to catch them live in this city.

I suppose you could say the band’s music is rooted in folk and roots music. Defined by expertly picked acoustic guitars, layered harmonies, and an undeniable energy and passion that builds as each song progresses. The band may be a three piece, but damn the sound is far more robust than it seems. There is drive in their sound. A drive that pushes you forward along with the words and the sounds that they are creating. And damn, if I am not happy to be a passenger for that ride.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Devin and Calin backstage at Newport (Martin regretfully was at another interview). We grabbed a picnic table, sat down, and chatted for a few about the festival, music, and of course the family sentiment that Newport Folk has running deep through its being. Check it and be sure to check out the Thieves website for tour dates and more. They are excellent.
