Sometimes we get caught up in other projects. Supporting other artists. So much so we can forget about our own original art. Dylan Sevey has been playing an incredibly important supporting role in the past few years. With a move to Nashville, drumming for Ron Gallo and others and generally being a hell of a good dude, its been a long time coming for a new song or two from the singer-songwriter.
Sevey has an incredibly humble and mellow way about his delivery. Each word is tempered with careful musing and a gentle nature. Its just so…fucking…beautiful the way in which he delivers each verse. So much so that the conveyance of themes bordering on self deprecation and reflection are counterbalanced in a brilliant and gorgeous way. And the arrangement is a wonderful homage that feels equal parts Beatles-esque vocal delivery meets the soul and rock edge of the Band, with swirling and delightfully warm keys and just enough vibe and funk to get you swaying along to the arrangement.
But its not all about the sonic landscape. Dylan returns with his wit and charm in songwriting as well. Lines like the hook give you pause, make you think and smile a bit. It hits in just the right way.
Half the time I think I’m good; the other times, I pretend
When I understood up for myself, I went under again
I could listen to this dude all day…and I think I will and you should too.
The latest track is called “Understood Up For Myself” and Dylan will be back in New England a month from today with the Gentleman at Pumphouse Music Works. Hit the FACEBOOK event for more info.
