Singled Out: Chris Jones & The Night Drivers “Back In The High Life Again” (Steve Winwood)

There is a thread in bluegrass music in the past few years of covering more mainstream or pop hits…or classic rock or songs that may not quite fit the genre, but when executed properly can really drive hard. Chris Jones & The Night Drivers step up to the challenge here, tackling the Steve Winwood hit “Back in the High Life Again”. It presses forward forcefully. Jones’ voice compelling and brawny, cutting through the mix of expertly picked instruments. A pleasant listen that is equally danceable as it is impressive.

Who: Chris Jones & The Night Drivers

From: Nashville, TN

Song: “Back In The High Life Again” (Steve Winwood)

Latest Record: The Choosing Road, out March 29

What About It: “‘Back in the High Life‘ marks our first-ever cover of an ’80s pop hit. We decided if we did it, we didn’t want to do it for the novelty of it, but because it was a song that really worked with our sound and musical approach. This Steve Winwood classic felt just right. Mark Stoffel (mandolinist) and I were already fans of the song and we found our own interpretation of it came naturally. It was  a lot of fun to record.” —Chris Jones, guitarist and vocalist.
