What About It: “The song has a little bit of an attitude towards being a musician and a family man. I wrestle with that having two young daughters and a wife, house, fish, cats etc. Not including all the neighborhood kids who eat all my food half the time. Haha. I feel like it’s stupid to do this sometimes when money’s tight and gigs are hard on the band with little pay. So sometimes drinking gets in the way. That’s why I went with the title “12 Steps”, like a 12 step program to quit booze. Which I have done recently. On my own. Not easy. But that’s what the songs about. I guess 12 steps refers to 3 steps from the Lynyrd Skynyrd, I obviously took the hook from 3 steps and changed it around.
The quote I hear is “if your dumb enough to deal with the stardom, if your dumb enough to deal with your wife’s postpartum, there coming up two by two, I really love you I do, sure would like to see ya but know one knows you better than you” (hopefully people don’t take it the wrong way when I say it’s dumb to deal with your wife’s depression, because it’s not dumb it’s life). It’s a struggle that I put into the music. And all I got is love for everyone and everything. We all struggle to find a voice or a foothold or a friend, when it gets dark keep going. I referred to the ghost of Kevin Bacon as a reference point to the past gone by or as to say I am the ghost of Kevin Bacon. I was born in 1978 so I grew up in the 80s and sometimes name drop characters of that generation to spark some thought process for people not sure what it means totally but it’s fun. Plus I’d like to play w the Bacon Brothers.”
