Fresh Track: “Ancient Tattoos,” by Gentle Temper

It’s that gritty strumming. It’s that initial wail, followed by an insistent and groovy vocal. It’s the way this song grabs you and won’t let go. I love how “Ancient Tattoos,” by Gentle Temper builds and builds, takes a breath, and comes right back at you.

Of the song, Marion says it was, “a lyrical bloodletting for feelings of self-contempt, evoking the desire to be somebody, or something, else. Over time it has become a sort of dark anthem for hope and resilience, a reminder that I am stronger than my mind sometimes allows me to feel. We hope this song allows listeners to feel whatever it is they’re feeling, and, by its end, to be one step closer to letting those feelings go.”

The duo is nominated for New Artist of the Year by the fine folks at The Boston Music Awards, and they will be celebrating the release of their debut full-length album, Our Warm Red Light, at Grendel’s Den on Wednesday, October 10. Muddy Ruckus joins the bill there, so you know Cambridge is going to be moving.
