Its been a minute since we have dug into the treasure chest of records coming out of our friend Eric Lichter’s Dirt Floor recording studio…a big mistake on our part.
While its taken a bit to take a big bite out of The Wolff Sisters‘ latest record “Cahoon Hollow“, its just as tasty a couple months after its release. Dotted with Stratocaster licks, steady rhythms and key arrangements ranging from the incredibly subtle and beautiful to epic and huge, the record as a whole is a groovy-meets-raw collection of tunes that can only be conjured and spiffed up with the chemistry and harmonies that siblings can create.
“South Dakota” immediately hit me. Rachael Wolff’s voice has a certain element of softness to it. It pulls you in to listen close, but its that velvety vulnerability that is the real trick here as you are locked into the beauty of the track as a whole because of it and there is no escaping.
A rock solid foundation of drums and bass prop up the 3 sisters as they sing together on the chorus. The song builds, with a slow acoustic strum and distant, reverbating electric lines. The piano enters, a drum kick in and then we are off. The band does an incredibly great job highlighting each of the three sisters’ strengths, but truly, absolutely, its when they are all together on the same wavelength where those special moments really exist. And for that, we are grateful.
Pick up the record today and give today’s Fresh Track a stream (or 12).
