Song Premiere: “Gas Station,” by Super Doppler

There was a time when in order to get from point A to B, you had to sometimes ask directions. Super Doppler’s new song, “Gas Station,” riffs on that reality of a time gone by, pulling out the situation to develop a metaphor about knowing where you’re headed in life. The opening line, “Will somebody show me the way back home?” sung by Neal Friedman feels plaintive and searching, but then the song launches into a grooving, upbeat tune. “Gas Station,” which will be released on Spotify on Thursday, April 19, has a sense of location and dislocation, being unsure of where you are and where you fit, but being grounded in familiar landmarks and ways of knowing. I really like that the “old gas station” is both where you should turn, and how you know you’ve gone too far. The song takes advantage of the group’s greatest strengths: fantastic harmonies and a deep sense of rhythm at the heart of their songwriting.

Super Doppler has been releasing a song a month through its Super Secret Singles Club, and you get to hear the songs before their release on streaming services. This is an email you actually want to land in your inbox. It’s a great way to stay in touch with the band and listen to what they’ve been working on.

I got to catch Super Doppler on their last northeast swing and chat with guitarist Michael Adkins (interview here) and it’s great to know that they’ll be back this way in June. That show was a highlight of 2017 for me–this is a really fun band to catch live and I urge you to get out there to see for yourself.

Check out “Gas Station” and pre-save it to Spotify here. Sign up for the singles club. And see Super Doppler live on June 22 at Sonia or June 23 at FOAM. Below, you’ll find a list for their upcoming tour, and you can stay up on tour dates here.
