Singled Out: The Mammals “Doctor’s Orders”

Who: The Mammals

From: Hudson Valley, NY

Song: “Doctor’s Orders”

Latest Record: “Sunshiner” out on April 20th

What about It: “Doctor’s Orders is a loose, upbeat track that we think your rootsy listeners will enjoy while driving down the road or dancing around their kitchens. It features Ruthy playing double fiddles with herself, Ken Mauri wailing on the Hammond B3 organ, Jacob Silver flying on the bass, Mike Merenda skankin’ the guitar, and Konrad Meissner crackin’ that snare. As the lyrics say, “It’s a fiddle tune and it’s a quick fix, it’s an antidote to the politics, come on gimme some of them hot licks, yeah!” – Ruth Ungar

Our friend Dirk Powell had this to say after he had a listen: “A brown bottle of that medicine that I want so bad knocked over, spilled onto the top of an old wooden dresser, getting sticky, flowing to the edge of itself. A long light through the windows, broken by old panes that someone needs to glaze, that someone’s BEEN needing to glaze, but ain’t nobody going to. A bed in this room, close to the floorboards, sheets pulled off the edges and twisted up in patterns that hold the waves of the last bodies to move in them. Yeah, the whole room is thick. A car engine idling outside, rumbling, putting out fumes. Breath makes fumes too in this cold, but not inside the house, or the car. Someone’s ready to go, someone in the driver’s seat, wearing a hat that looks damn good on them. The night sidling up to the end of this day? Totally fuckin’ awesome.”

The Mammals play Club Passim on April 20th to celebrate the release of the new album Sunshiner. Vivian Leva & Riley Calgano open the show at 7pm. Tickets are $25 and selling fast.
