Peep This: Billy Strings Video for “Dealing Despair”
If there is one thing undeniable about guitarist and songwriter Billy Strings, its that the gent has an fevered passion to his performances and songwriting. A song that has quickly become one of my favorites off of String’s 2017 release “Turmoil and Tinfoil” is a sure example of that and “Dealing Despair” just got a concept music video to go along with it.
The first minute focuses on violence in America and how accustomed and desensitized we have become with shootings and violence in media and culture of modern society. Billy is able to fuel that fire into his words and playing, putting forth a song that you just as equally want to stomp your feet to as it does to inspire you to go out and protest. At times the weariness of how much bullshit we see pulled from those in authority is worn on Strings’ face, but the glimmer, that burning zeal crosses his face as he grimaces when uttering certain lines.
When we spoke with Billy back in September last year he mentioned that the song had a real deep and lasting impact on him. He explains, “I was really pissed off when I wrote that song. It was shortly after another unarmed black man had be shot down by police. I just felt like the world was so sick. People are fucking lost. I still feel like that. Its embarrassing to be a human on this planet sometimes.”
Well, as we may sometimes all feel that way, we are damn lucky to have artists like Billy Strings lending their voices to societal change and not being afraid to speak up about what he believes is right. Check out the video below and if you haven’t purchased “Turmoil and Tinfoil” yet, well you should remedy that right now.
