Kayla Schureman came to me by way of an old friend, her voicing gracing a few songs on one of my favorite records last year but there was something different about her voice. Where so many harmony vocals add a wonderful depth but fit so well in the background, Kayla’s voice cried out to be heard more. I needed more of this gal’s voice and her own songs being sung by it. Luckily, we get just that today and more in just a few short weeks.
If Stevie Nicks was a little more country, that’s where Schureman’s voice lays. A gorgeous tone that is lightly iced with the subtlest twang that says “this is a little bit country, but a whole lot of something special”. The first track off her upcoming release lets it shine and open up just as it should. The band is super tight, a groove laced with intricate and light guitar lines and outward bleeding keyboard chords, it manages to keep an engaging feel but truly lets Schureman’s voice drift above it and be highlighted perfectly.
“Kiss The Ground” is the first track off of her upcoming release of the same name (out on March 28th). Get on over to her website or Bandcamp and be sure to one of the first to pick up what will undoubtedly be one of my favorite voices of 2017.
