George Woods has got soul. And I don’t mean some cheap manufactured auto-tuned version of it. From the depths of his abdomen and heart a voice resonates outward, carrying stories and emotions that can be of the dismal demeanor, but still all the more impactful and poignant. Point: “My Father’s Son”.
About the song Woods says, “‘My Father’s Son’ was born from a conversation with my brother where I realized there were large chunks of my childhood I couldn’t remember. Right after my dad got remarried there’s a lot of blank space, replaced only by a memory of anger, and a lingering need to be heard. This song is for anyone who needs a voice, who feels like they don’t have one. For me it’s in these two lines: ‘My soul is a songbird whose trapped in a cage, and every word from my lips is it trying to escape’.”
The song in and of itself presents the songwriter’s voice in a deep and powerful mournfulness. Its smooth on the intake, but still has a bit of that bite to it that gets the point across. A slow strummed, ringing guitar carrying the weight of the narrative beneath his vocal. Its part R&B swagger mixed with singer-songwriter focus. The purpose being to utilize a voice that is really beautiful and engaging to bring across the cutting story of the song. As a writer it is evident that Woods is an explorer. Searching for ways to take his experiences and share them in a way that is both listenable, but makes a point with powerful, personal writing…and again, a voice like silky velvet doesn’t hurt the listenability. I am hooked
Give watch and a listen today. Woods is always creating and seeking outlets for his songs in ways that I find incredibly creative and interesting. This music video is no different.
