Video Premiere: Eva Walsh “Bittersweetheart”

I remember the day I met Eva Walsh quite vividly. New friend at the time Mark Whitaker had her along for a jam at Cambridge’s Plough and Stars and from the moment I met her I knew there was something special to the songwriter. There is an innate likability to her, not just as a person but as a musician. Her songs are catchy and filled with hooks, her voice is dotted with jazzy inflections and smooth waves of soothing warmth, and as a string player and arranger she is second to none. That night I knew I had found a lifelong friend and musical contemporary in Ms. Walsh…I mean, hell, she allowed me to beat box along to her song “Storybook”, if thats not a trusting musician I don’t know what is.

“Bittersweetheart” is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to her 2012 release of the same name of that fateful mouth percussion tune she so graciously allowed me to butcher. The video for it follows the vibe of the song, dreamlike in its quality. Ethereal, floating and flowing, carefree in a way perhaps. As with the title of the tune and record, it has a juxtaposition of beautiful shots, both dark and light. The interplay of opposites. Walsh’s voice is as strong as ever and is as the central point of the tune with a swirling cyclone of soft strings and a root bass note hit every so often, almost like a slow beating heart. There is a haunting feeling to the video that complements the ooooh’s and general pace of the tune.

Give it a watch, check out Eva’s site for news and tour updates (she is coming to the tail end of a big run this week) and pick up the new record when it releases officially on July 1st.
