Track Highlight: Elison Jackson “Ghost F*cker”
With a name like ‘Ghost F*cker’, you would think a song would be in your face and all out, balls to the wall type attitude that doesn’t give a fuck, maybe includes some fairly lewd lyrics and perhaps is a screamo kind of a sound…but Elison Jackson‘s tune doesn’t need all that to make this tune all the more impactful in its delivery. The name may catch you at first, but its the groove of the song that sinks its hook into you and keeps you listening.
With droning electric guitar notes in a way similar to that of The XX and Elison Jackson lead singer Sam Perduta’s relaxed, but cracked vocal keeping the flow of the tune moving forward, its like a swirling canyon of sound by the time the ripping guitar solo hits, then dives into a whirlwind of bass heavy throbbing, that guitar riff coming back in and tying up the ends. The band blends their own mix of garage punk rock and folk that has a bit of grit, while being focused down in the soil of songwriting to nurture the song. Its a great balance.
Perduta’s voice is reminiscent of bluesy songwriter Jonah Tolchin in a way. He has a likable quality to his voice, the roughness is sanded clear with that amicable quality to its tone. Making it seem susceptible or vulnerable in some fashion…but then again with a title like ‘Ghost F*cker’, you know the dudes got some balls.
