Locals Covering Locals: Sumner & Moss Cover The Sun Parade “Heart’s Out”
Johnny and June. Emmylou and Gram. Dave and Gillian. Pattengale and Ryan. There are some voices that were simply destined to be in harmony with one another and I think that in the case of Sumner & Moss that rings truer than any other act I have witnessed around New England.
Originally started as a duo, the band has recently added upright bassist Michael Siegel to lay the low end foundation and it has worked out beautifully. He perfectly fits into the mold that Rachel Sumner and Sam Moss have established with the band. Rich harmonies, mind boggling tenor guitar solos, and a dynamic that only occurs when folks come together and a natural chemistry just exists there.
The trio’s take on The Sun Parade‘s song “Heart’s Out” blew my mind when they began to run through it a few times as I hung a few mics and got my camera ready to roll. The melting of Rachel and Sam’s voices is pure, natural and absolutely beautiful. Sam’s guitar playing is nothing short of virtuosity, and the rhythm is kept steady by Rachel’s guitar and Michael’s impressive upright lines. They managed to take a song and elevate it to a completely different place and genre than the original, which is more rooted in the indie rock realm.
But don’t take my word for it…check out Sumner & Moss tackle the tune below and download the track over at our bandcamp page in a new compilation we are calling “Extended Play”.
