Track of the Week: Nino Polizzi “When the River Thaws”
There is a very organic and real feeling to this tune from songwriter Nino Polizzi, but a confidence and pride in how he sings each word. With a slight rasp and gentleness to his voice he sings “we will sing and celebrate, when the river thaws” there is a theme of hope in his writing. Looking forward to when things are rebirthed and we can start anew, but in terms of the life that the thawing of the water brings but also at the core and heart of our being.
The song has a nice, metal ringing to it. The guitar isn’t warm or compressed (which is very fitting for the song), almost banjo like in its nature…though there is a banjo buried in the mix as well. A bass line brings the arrangement to a head towards the end of the song where it builds with shaker percussion.
Nino Polizzi has a really nice way about the way he sings. A songwriter from the suburbs of Chicago he tells me that “I wrote the title song on a trip to the Adirondacks in New York when we took a boat tour and were told how some houses on Lake Placid are only accessible in the summer when the water is not frozen because there are no roads on that side of the water. I took that concept and made a love song dealing withe the hand that nature plays in life, love and death.”
