Track of the Week: Lula Wiles Covers Dietrich Strause

I have heard many folks cover over folks over the years. I have now produced over 30 local artists covering other local artists. While all of those sessions have been special and fantastic, a select few really stand out in my mind as being pure magic.

When Lula Wiles came into Riverview Studios to cover Dietrich Strause’s song “Song for Alice” it started as any normal day would. The girls came to the studio, we put a pot of coffee on, and hung mics. But what unfolded over the course of the next hour and a half was absolute beauty. With instrumentation revolving around just an upright bass and a fiddle, the voices of these three ladies absolutely soar. The build of the tension within the track is just magical. Starting with Ellie Buckland’s voice, strong and powerful, Isa Burke adding perfect harmony, and eventually ending with Mali Obomsawin for an absolutely breathtaking 3 part vocal harmony by the end of the tune…I mean, jeez.

This is the type of stuff that makes me weak in the knees, but I can’t get enough.

Listen and listen hard.
