Album Feature Friday: Hoot&Holler “Is This Goodbye?”
Hoot&Holler takes the best of two separate fantastic artists and melds them into something that is even greater than the sum of their parts. The band’s roots dig deep into the hills of Appalachian folk tunes and fiddle driven melodies. They blend two voices and instruments harmonious in a way that is…for lack of better phrasing, perfect harmony. Simple and relatable, but the musicianship of both of these artists is anything but simple.
The title track is a great listen, flecked with quick guitar runs and fiddle lines carved below the beautiful blending of Alvey and Kilianski’s voices. Upbeat and cheerful in a way. It has a very driving, forward moving feel to it. Alvey takes the lead, she has some old time flavor to her voice in how she can command the style, but leads in a way that isn’t straight “mountain music”. Coloring the themes and style with some modern flair.
“Slow & Steady” is a great partner and opposing force to the more uptempo title track. Kilianski takes a somber tone in a leisurely plod. Moody, but still hopeful with the tone of the singer’s voice. He has a way of shining a light into even the most dire of storied consequences. As one might imagine, the two per their M.O. adding in great melodies that tie the song together with a common thread.
Give this a listen today and keep tabs on this great duo…although due to a recent move I think much more will come from this great project. (and check out that cover photo!)
