There is something very rock n’ roll about Keith McCurdy and Vudu Sister’s ‘Household Items’. And as a kid coming into his own in the early 90s, rock n’ roll to me had tinges of punk and grunge. The angst of Kurt Cobain and memorability of Pearl Jam. There is something muddy and soiled in how McCurdy sings, something that just isn’t perfect, it’s not the ideal of what society pictures perfection and beauty to be…but there is beauty in this music. There is an ache and a sting in his delivery of the lyrics and the music really moves.
The title track of this album maintains an overdriven groove courtesy of some great guitar work. Arranging in a way that makes the most impact of the noise, falling into the verse and rising back into chaos. Chaos that is controlled, but a cluster of the intertwining music, spinning feverously, before it dizzies and falls.
I really love Keith’s voice. There is strength and passion in how he sings, but the undertones of vulnerability. The music is raw and powerful in the best possible way.
