Album Highlight Friday: Precious You “Self Titled”

0004760486_10I check in with my bud and old bandmate, Matt Chieffo, from time to time to see whats going on in his musical world. We played in both the band Man Alive! together and more recently, our short lived duo The Dead Ringers (Matt also recorded a song for the first volume of Locals Covering Locals). He had something in the works that was a bit more rock n’ roll last time I spoke with him and just yesterday he sent a long some demos he posted for a new project called “Precious You” with a couple other musicians along for the ride…I was floored. From the first listen I knew I had to share it with folks. Rock n’ roll, soul, and bits of an Rn’B kind of a vibe to it. The music has a groove and life to it that really speaks to me. I have always been a fan of Chieffo’s voice. It’s unique in its howl-like quality, and it fits like a glove over the driving guitar lines and heavy throb of the drums here.

The first track “Please Do Something” is a volcanic explosion of groove. The guitar melody just makes you automatically bob your head. Cutting in and out to highlight the slightly overdrive tone of Matt’s voice.

The lead up track “You’re the One (Candy Kisses)” has a more Motown swing type of a feel to it, but with a contemporary twist and more heavy on the rock. It really works for me.

“All of the Time” pays a nice homage to some blues in its style, but has a bit of extra swagger and swing to it.

This isn’t the type of music that you sit still and listen to quietly. It gets you moving, its get you shaking, and I dig that. This is a solid collection from what I hope turns into a very active and exciting new band in the music community here in town.

Check out their Facebook page for updates and such, but they will be at Atwoods Tavern on July 19th.
