Album Highlight Friday (and Show): Heather Woods “Let Me In”

One part of writing this thing that is great is getting to hear music from folks before it heads off into the world and everyone else gets to hear it. Heather Woods’ new EP “Let Me In” has a local release on May 28th at the Lizard Lounge, but won’t be online and streaming or more broadly released until a bit later this year…

There is a gentle innocence in Woods’ voice, but its heavy at the same time. On the title track the end notes on certain words just soar throughout the track. The song builds slowly, until it explodes in a sonic volcano at the bridge, before dipping back down slow over just a picked guitar and Heather’s voice…before again erupting. I can’t get over how solid her voice is. It has a pretty and delicate feature to its tone, but she manages to be all over the place, as far as her range goes, in a split second. And that’s a good thing. Great control and makes the song exciting as hell.

“This Love” is moody and somewhat evocative in the way it paces along. Again, the songwriter’s voice is powerful and the center of attention. There is an almost Middle Eastern vibe to the breakdown at the center of the track that is a great breaking point for the song.

Heather Woods writes in a way that is commercially viable, but still with an independent-do this how I want to attitude. It may be on a college radio station or in the background of the end credits of a show on NBC. The arrangements of the songs are interesting and rise and fall, engaging listeners, and nothing here is cookie cutter folk or pop. Some really intriguing songs with a lot of layers to dig deep into and damn, the girl can sing. There is a whole hell of a lot of passion and vibrance in this gal’s songs. Check her out.
