Song of the Week: Kerri Powers “Old Shirt”

I have been posting a song of the week on the front page of the site without a proper write up for the past month or so and figured I would just give a quick “why” going forward of how that song really struck me for that week…

Kerri Powers’ original version of the song “Old Shirt” has a real driving kind of a power to it. It moves forward, the music really carries the feeling forward and the rasp and grit in her voice add a feeling that not many can match.

This weekend Krista Baroni came into the studio to record “Old Shirt” for Locals Covering Locals and gave it an entirely different feel. It was almost as if Krista had written the song herself. I think she really injected herself into the song, the words contained it and gave it her signature “Baroni fingerstyle”…so much so it really could have been her own.

I believe that is what puts a good song on one side of the fence and a GREAT song on the other. Another person can listen to it and feel as though it was written for them. The emotion crosses from just being a release of some sort for an artist to being a place where the listener (or musician covering the tune) can burrow themselves between the verses and feel as though its for them, about them.

Kudos to both the ladies…for writing and for covering such a great tune. Buy their music, go to their shows, support these talented songwriters.
