Meet the BIG RED Nominees: Rock n’ Rollers

Tigerman Woah!- Appalachian mountain folk/bluegrass influenced punk rock with the occasional hip-hop freak-out. Their bio on their reverbnation page is quite the story, check that out here (http://www.reverbnation.com/tigermanwoah) http://tigermanwoah.com/

Smith&Weeden “Somewhere between early 70’s Stones, John Prine, and Outlaw Country.”  “It’s good old fashioned rock n’ roll, but certainly has hints of that early years Americana ala Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. Its just f*ckin’ fun and good music, man.” -Red Line Roots https://smithandweeden.bandcamp.com/

The Blue Ribbons- The Blue Ribbons was formed by singer/songwriter/keyboardist James Rohr. They have been building a base of devoted fans with their original and soulful music. Described as “Ray Charles and Tom Waits on a pirate ship with Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart,” they combine “upbeat disillusionment and celebratory fatalism with musicianship” – Charan Devereux;Boston Globe. All very active musicians, each member of The Blue Ribbons brings his influences and experiences to the music and this is at the heart of their creativity. Anything goes in this band, and it usually does. http://theblueribbons2.bandcamp.com/

Tallahassee- The New England-based roots rock band, Tallahassee takes it’s name from a Native American word meaning, “old town.” Tallahassee strives to pioneer uncharted sonic territory, harnessing diverse influences ranging from indie to classic rock, folk and blues all filtered through bandmembers’ diverse backgrounds in professional football, fine art and classical music. Tallahassee’s latest effort, Old Ways, draws inspiration from theband’s dynamic and energetic live shows. Over a year-and-a-half in the making, Old Ways showcases a broader sonic palette as well as the most adventurous songs the band has ever written.

Baker Thomas Band- Beginning on stage at TOAD in Cambridge, MA during a weekly residency in March of 2009, Baker Thomas Band has always been an eclectic collection of musicians and good friends getting together to make great music and have a blast. With anywhere from 7 to 10 and even more musicians on stage, the BTB is a wrecking ball of good times and great tunes. Vocal hooks and rock and roll lyrics are backed by one of the sickest bands you’ll hear. Horns, violin, and mandolin soar over the top, dueling guitars fill up the middle and the bottom is held down by rock solid bass and a thunderous kick drum.  The clever and catchy hit songs cover the spectrum of classic rock, funk and groove, with hints of bluegrass and jam band…. so many influences… one big sound http://www.bakerthomasband.com/

The Silks- Rock and Roll may not be dead, but it does seem like there’s a priest leaning over its bed, reciting the last rites. However, if The Silks have anything to do with it, the body will soon be out of bed, bopping around the room. What makes their debut disc, Last American Band, so special is this Rhode Island trio not only rocks but also rolls. While longhaired singer-g…uitarist, Tyler-James Kelly belts it out like early Paul Rodgers, bassist Jonas Parmelee and drummer Matthew Donnelly, keep the beat swinging. One listen to these guys and you’ll remember this music is for the body as well as the mind. The minute you hear The Silks? You can’t sit down. http://www.thesilksmusic.com/

Sarah Borges- As cliché as it may be, absence makes the heart grow fonder couldn’t be a more genuine statement for singer/songwriter Sarah Borges as she embarks on her next musical adventure, the release of her new album, “Radio Sweetheart.” After a year away from pouring her heart and soul into her music, penning her emotions into powerful lyrics, and leaving it all on the stage during rivetinglive shows, her love for  her craft grew that much stronger. Paste magazine hits the nail on the head when they wrote, “she has all the good parts of Sheryl Crow’s sound without the L.A. pop suckdom.”

Comanchero- Since 2003, Comanchero has crafted an Americana sound that combines old traditions with new, Country with Rock, Bluegrass with Blues, Honky-Tonk with Funk, and Roots with Rockabilly.  While unique in their own sound, there is something strikingly familiar in Comanchero’s songs that weave influences ranging from The Allman Brothers, The Band, Little Feat, & Led Zeppelin, to today’s contemporaries such as Wilco, The Drive -By Truckers, & Mumford & Sons. http://www.comancheromusic.com/
