I remember being about 10 years old and visiting my cousins and aunt down in North Carolina. My aunt dragged us out to a square dance. Growing up in a Boston suburb, I didn’t know what that even entailed. I had seen it on the ol’ TV, but had no idea what I was in for. I came out of it having the time of my life and dancing the night away.
Well, some good folks around town (with Amy Alvey at the helm and Patrick Coman by her side) are allowing you the chance to feel that thrill I felt all those years ago. Tomorrow evening the first BAR-n Dance will take place at the Aeronaut Brewery in Union Square, Somerville.

About The Camberville BAR-n Dance
Cambridge/Somerville is an amazing hub for both roots music and folk dancing: Club Passim, Americana Mondays at PA’s Lounge, Bluegrass night at the Cantab, Bluesy Tuesday at The Democracy Center, The New England Americana Festival, contra dances in Porter Square, not to mention the American Roots program at Berklee. We at “Dare To Be Square” see an opportunity to unite these large and growing audiences by hosting a square dance (with an old time string band) and a featured set from some of the city’s best Americana bands.
