While there is another Campfire going on this weekend a few states away, the twice a year staple hits Harvard Square again with an incredible line up of musicians and songwriters. Matt Smith, you always outdo yourself amigo. If you are able to get out even to a few sets this weekend, do it. Here’s what I recommend.
Friday night:
Get to Passim early to catch the sensation that is the Suitcase Junket. Matt Lorenz is an artist in both a musical sense and a visual sense…and he combines the two in some mashup that is unimaginable to the lay person. Taking pieces of “things” and creating instruments. His music is bluesy, soulful, and has a groove that you can move to.
Later on in the evening is an in the round that will create a “hear a pin drop” scenario. 3 of my favorite people will be in the round playing songs, playing on each others songs, and just being overall totally awesome. Hayley Sabella, Eva Walsh and Mark Whitaker…most good for your ears and souls people. Most good indeed.
Saturday:
1:15 PM The Meadows Brothers. Do you “like” The Everly Brothers, or The Milk Carton Kids, or David Rawlings and Gillian Welch? Then you will LOVE these boys. Melding two voices and two guitars into a beautiful whirlwind of sound that will sweep you up and lay you down ever so gently. Be there. Just do it, don’t question me, just do it.
Sunday:
First set , 12PM. Two great gals I know and two gals I don’t know yet, but I am sure I will. Molly Pinto Madigan was a last minute edition to our one year anniversary show at Lizard Lounge back in February . An end of the night, on the spot set to a rowdy crowd that had been drinking all night and she hushed them to a standstill. Krista Baroni has a finger picking style that is equally as beautiful as it is impressive and she has a great voice and knack for story telling to boot!
4:30 PM Two of my favorites from our little sister state down south, RI. Steve Allain and Tracie Potochnik join forces to create a super folk duo! I just reviewed Allain’s volume 3 of his singles with a glowing assessment, and Tracie’s last record ‘Dream’ was a good dream, you know, one where you can fly and eat ice cream and candy without getting full or diabetes. Can’t wait to hear what they cook up together!
Sunday:
Ghost of Paul Revere early in the day to get you woken up with their raucous and percussive tunes.
Ian Fitzgerald is in the round with 3 other folks. I am sure the other folks are amazing, but you know who I am recommending that set on account of.
Go out to Passim!!!
