My Newport Sunday Plan..Can’t Believe Its the Last Day
I will start my Sunday off kind of sad, melancholy, and I am sure drained from the previous two days of baking in the hot Newport sun absolutely wound up experiencing all of the wonderful music the previous 48 hours brought. That will soon be replaced with excitement, anxiousness, and joy as I enter the gates for the final time in 2014. It is Sunday at the Newport Folk Festival and another one full of difficult decisions…
My plan is to hang for a big by the side of the Harbor Stage and catch who I anticipate being this year’s Cinderella Story…The Deslondes. I also really want to get up to the Quad and catch Leif Vollebekk as well, but may try and see him when he is in the Museum as a big more of an intimate show. It would be cool to see the two varying sides of his music.
From there I will pin ball back to the Harbor stage to catch some Caitlin Rose. When she came through town with The Hard Working Americans, she absolutely blew me and my old man away, so she is a need to see again here at Newport. Then it’s back to catch the Lonesome Trio. I think what Ed Helms does for the Bluegrass community is incredible and very generous. He loves this music and I cannot wait to see how that plays out on stage…plus I am sure they have some pretty damn witty banter to boot.
1-3 PM has we wanting to be in a whole bunch of different places. I will probably have some down time to film festival goers here and there, but I need to catch at least some of Gregory Alan Isakov (if not his entire set…yeah, probably his entire set). Then cut through the backstage to see Dawes and then rush to catch some of Hozier on the Harbor stage.
From here I could head up to see Hurray for the Riff Raff. Last year they were killer and its been an incredible year for them. Also, catching Ramblin’ Jack’s set standing next to Alynda was pretty cool. Just to see someone who just came off stage hanging out there with the crowd as a fan of the man on stage. So I will likely catch at least some of what they are offering at the Quad.
Then, one of the acts my wife and I wholeheartedly agree on needing to see all of will be Connor Oberst. I will take as many photos in the pit as they allow, and then enjoy the rest of his set.
Back to the Museum to take in some of The Bluegrass Situation before I catch Jeff Tweedy in what I am sure will be an incredible set. I am truly excited for this one. Very, very, very excited.
Lucero could be cool, Rodrigo y Gabriela are probably the act that I am most confused about being a part of a folk festival but I am intrigued and their energy will surely be amazing.
Then Mavis Staples obviously will be a high point…and I am sure there will be MANY MANY special guests.
Man…I can’t believe it’s over. I am tired but fulfilled and won’t be able to wait until next year…when I will actually get a hotel room early on.
