Interview: Eva Walsh w/ Hayley Sabella at Club Passim – May 15th
Passim is known for hosting the best and more talented musicians this side of…well, this side of earth I guess. May 15th will be no different as Eva Walsh headlines the club for the very first time. She has graced the stage many times, but this is the first big one for her and I will be surprised if that room can contain her excitement and joy. Needless to say all in attendance will be heading home that evening feeling a whole lot better about life as her joy is infectious. Top that off with the incredible talent of Hayley Sabella (fresh off her release King Solomon) and you have a night not to be missed! Eva answered us some questions about the show, music, friends, and touring. Check it out below.
1) So you have quite the show coming up at Passim. Tell us the details, who, what, when, how do I get tickets?
EW: Yes! I’m having my headlining debut & tour launch show at Club Passim on May 15th at 8 pm! The beautiful Hayley Sabella is opening the night and then my full band & I will be on after! Tickets are available on the Club Passim website– get them now!
2) Why is this show such a big one for you? That’s to say I know why Passim is so special, but for those not in the know, why is it such a special place? Its all the kick off of a big tour, tell us about that too!
EW: It’s a big show for me, personally, but it’s also just that it’s at Club Passim. Club Passim has history, and it’s AMAZING history. People like Bob Dylan and even Regina Spektor have played there, not to mention all of my current favorite musicians. It’s the best listening room in town and ever since I moved to Boston, I’ve dreamed of headlining there. So in that sense, the place is a big deal, but also it’s just a big deal to me because it’s a symbolic show. I’m playing my dream venue at a time when I’m taking huge steps towards making my musician dreams come true– I’m leaving a full-time job to go on tour and it officially marks the moment when I will be devoting MOST of my time to being a musician, as opposed to wishing I could spend most of my time to being a musician. I’m stepping into the deep end and I’m celebrating that night at Club Passim.
3) And you will be sharing the stage with Ms. Hayley Sabella? How did you two come about being musical cohorts and pals.
EW: Hayley is just sunshine in human form. I met her when our friend Mark Whitaker had me accompanying him on fiddle for a house show she had. When we left, I thought to myself: “Well, I hope I get to hang out with those people, and Hayley again.” A little while later, Hayley contacted me just to chat about music. And again, as we talked about music and life and songwriting for hours, I thought to myself, “Oh man, I really hope I get to be friends with her.” And we are. What a joy, what a talent, what a beautiful person inside and out. I’m so happy to be sharing the night with her. She adds so much sunshine and good music to everything. I owe many happy moments to her.
4) So it has been about a year and a half since your last album, Storybook, which is wonderful by the way. Any plans for new recordings coming up that you can clue us in on (you know, aside from the wonderful cover you recorded for Locals Covering Locals)?
EW: I have a lot of new songs, and many of them will be performed at Club Passim and on the tour, including one that nobody has heard yet! It’s high time for a new album or EP, and I’ll be launching into planning that project as soon as I recover from tour. (Also, Locals Covering Locals! July 5th!)
5) What can we expect from Eva Walsh for the remainder of 2014?
EW: Well, I don’t know where anything this year will lead, but you can expect a lot of musical exploration, bigger shows, more instruments, more friends and more fun. I’m looking to play out on my fiddle a lot more, so you’ll see me around town a lot.
6) Anything else you want to let the adoring public know?
EW: I am filled with gratitude for the support and encouragement I’ve received in regards to my music and this tour. I’m hella excited about it and I’m very thankful that others are excited, too. It’s an adventure & I love everyone who has been a part of it. Thanks, Red Line!
