First Listen: Sawyer Lawson “The Driving Song”

Immediately I get hints of The Band. This tune has got a killer groove to it from the first note. Driven by a slew of instruments including a steady drum beat, the high cry of the mandolin, and a strong and steadfast fiddle melody…not to mention organs and guitars, always a good thing.

driving-song-release-splash-page-bannerThe musicianship is really top notch as I would expect from this guy. Everything works together in unison. The tune has a poppy flavor with a healthy dose of rootsy goodness. It’s something to drive around town on a sunny day day to…as the title aptly suggests.

The break down around the 2:40 mark puts Lawson’s voice on center stage. He has a really pleasant voice. One of those voices that plays well with others, would intermingle with another gent singing, a lady harmony,  or stands strong on its own.

A great summer time jam. Lyrically is doesn’t take itself too seriously. Some fun takes on the driving theme that the sonic quality of the track lends itself to so well. It’s one of those nice weather songs that will dig itself into your brain and you will be humming a week later and be glad you are.
