Video Premiere: “Not Okay,” by Rachel Marie
“Boys don’t cry.”
“My best will never be good enough.”
“I am the sum of my sin.”
When Rachel Marie released her album False Foundations last year, she asked her fans to comment on social media what their “false foundations” are. These comments are just a few of the words that flooded her social media channels.
We all have them: ideas that seem to root us in some way, that make us know assuredly how the world works, and that are, by any measure, wrong. These ideas can do real damage too: they can convince us that we are not enough, that we are not worthy of respect or love, that the world would be better off without us.
It’s a real honor to premiere the video for Rachel Marie’s song “Not Okay,” which features many of the “false foundations” that her fans sent her. The video perfectly complements the song, underscoring the need for community and people with whom it’s okay to be not okay. Amen.
